No one would expect, on the basis of his Form Guide ranking, that James Wade would claim Players Championship One, but ‘The Machine’ has always managed to add to his trophy case even as the competition increases.
Wade has the 20th highest average in the PDC, and only throws 44 maximums for every 200 legs played – Luke Littler does so nearly three times more often. Yet, Wade defeated two players ranked well ahead of him in large part due to timely checkouts.
The three-time UK Open champion finished scores of 137, 127, 130 and 104 in just 13 legs to defeat Michael van Gerwen after having only one ton-plus checkout in his first five matches of the day.
In terms of averages, Wade’s ranking in the Form Guide actually dropped by 0.36 points to 94.29. Perhaps no other player in the PDC has had less of a correlation between his probability of winning and recording a high average.
An unexpected loss in a rematch of the 2026 World Championship final was not enough to derail Luke Littler’s months long cruise at the top of the Form Guide.
Indeed, the man who exacted revenge in that match, Gian van Veen, was by far the bigger casualty in Form Guide standings after this past week’s action.
Any gains he made by reaching the final of his first Premier League night were ceded in a sub-par first week on the ProTour, in which he won just one match across the two events.
Those results stripped the European Champion of his first-place position in doubles, and dropped him nearly six points in OChE to seventh.
The Dutch number one is still ahead of four of his Premier League opponents for leg-winning efficiency and averages, but another matchup between the two World Championship finalists is unlikely to have the same result as it did last Thursday.
Van Veen is currently five and eleven points behind Littler in averages and OChE respectively, as Players Championship Two winner Wessel Nijman and fellow Dutchman Danny Noppert have both overtaken Van Veen in their OChE ratings.
Gerwyn Price’s incredible run to the final at Players Championship Two has seen the Welshman become the PDC’s most in-form doubles hitter, taking out 49.99% of his outer-ring attempts.
The three-time Grand Slam champion averaged 105.69 during a remarkable campaign in Hildesheim – the third-highest tournament average of any finalist during a Players Championship event.
Price’s superb scoring and finishing has propelled the Welshman to second on the OChE rankings, before a clash with Van Veen in the Premier League in Antwerp.
Two of the unexpected stars of the most recent World Championship are also enjoying a great start to their 2026 campaigns.
Justin Hood, who defeated Van Veen on Monday, is now ranked 12th in the PDC for averages over his last 200 legs (95.63), ahead of two Premier League contestants, whilst Hood is favoured to win more than 56% of his legs against his fellow ProTour competitors.
Arguably even more impressive was Krzysztof Ratajski’s comeback from dropping to his lowest ranking of the decade.
After reaching his second World Championship quarter-final – and the largest payday of his career – Ratajski advanced to the semi-final of Players Championship Two, losing only to a rampant Price.
In just one week, Ratajski’s OChE rating has risen more than five points, and the Polish number one is now one of the top five checkout hitters in the world.

The statistic is the % of legs a player would expect to win on the ProTour, calculated from a weighted average of 4,5, 6 & 7 visit checkout rates.
